Subscription SSL allows longer validity period
8 September 2020
From now on you can request SSL certificates from Sectigo on a subscription basis. With Subscription SSL you can enjoy the benefits of an SSL certificate with a longer validity period, despite the industry-wide limitation of the maximum validity period.
Limitation of validity period
As announced earlier this year, most browsers will no longer accept SSL certificates with a validity longer than one year from September 1, 2020. As a result, certificates with a term longer than 13 months will no longer be issued from August 18, 2020. On the one hand, a shorter duration increases safety, on the other hand it puts a greater burden on management and administration.
Sectigo launches Subscription SSL
Since August 18, Sectigo offers "Subscription SSL", which combines the security benefits of a shorter validity with the benefits of a longer validity. A subscription gives a price advantage, for example with a 5-year subscription you only pay for 4 years. In addition to the price advantage, this also saves the annual choice moment; you don't have to worry about this for a longer period of time.
How does Subscription SSL work?
All types of certificates from Sectigo are available on a subscription basis, from 2 to a maximum of 5 years. You pay once in advance for the full subscription period. This gives a price advantage: the price you pay in advance for, for example, a 5-year subscription is equal to 4 years of purchasing this certificate separately. So you save one year. Moreover, the administrative effort is limited: instead of every year, you only pay once every five years.
The technical lifespan of a certificate will have to be extended annually during the subscription period. You can renew the certificate once a year by submitting a new CSR, after which we go through the validation process again.
From now on you can request all SSL certificates from Sectigo for multiple years, you will then automatically receive a subscription. Subscription SSL has also recently become available via the Xolphin API.
